H&M Come Together

I chose this ad because it's such a kind, heartfelt, quiet piece of content that provides a relief during the madness of the holidays. It's an interesting setting as well, I mean who doesn't love a good vintage looking Wes Anderson set? He's just good. His simple symmetrical style is a nice match for H&M as well. They also had an interesting way to play the video on there site where they tell the story through additional videos on the sides; however, it doesn't directly coincide with the film and instead seems to be random tidbits that add to the story. They even play John Lennon's "So this is Christmas" when everyone comes together which has got to be in the top 5 of all Christmas songs, and must've cost a fortune to license.

I think the objective here was to align H&M with Wes Anderson who is quite the brand himself and at the same time they're reminding us all that it's Christmas time which means we need to shop, a lot. Wes Anderson's style is difficult to describe because it's all pervading, he even calls hot chocolate chocolate flavored beverage with whipped topping. Many will call it quirky, but I don't think that's an adequate description because it's not weird it's more a mix of light-hearted and an exacting eye that leaves all the shots feeling very warm and precise—which is quite difficult. Visually his composition closely matches 50s Japanese films where every interior shot is blocked perfectly symmetrical, but those come off as quite cold because they're static while Anderson's shots generally have a stylish swing to them or a big sliding pan as are prevalent in this short. This visual language closely matches H&M's style, where it's clean and collected but not sterile.

I'd say the target here is fairly young mainstream hipsters, because the real hipsters only shop at thrift stores, but really. H&M is a trendy brand that targets the mainstream people who want to stick out.
